Concept Art for Charlie the Clown.

As the star of a small 1920s travelling circus, “Charlie the Clown” is deeply dedicated to his craft, even as the golden age of the circus fades away. His playful antics and iconic appearance make him a beloved figure, while his deep nostalgia and quiet sadness add depth to his character. Embodying the Jester archetype, Charlie uses humour and playfulness to navigate difficult times, bringing joy to those around him and keeping spirits up (Hautala & Routamaa, 2008).

Charlie’s design draws inspiration from vintage circus clowns, aiming to capture a sense of timeless joy and surrealism. He is dressed in a traditional clown costume, featuring striped pants, a ruffled collar, oversized shoes and curled toes, a red wig, and his signature red and blue balloons. These elements evoke the golden age of the circus, using a complementary colour scheme with a bold contrast of red and blue—red evoking energy and blue adding balance for visual impact. The analogous yellow tones in the white parts give his appearance a warm, vintage feel, enhancing the nostalgic charm of his character.

Designed to perform in a circus-themed environment, Charlie’s performances are lively spectacles of slapstick comedy, juggling acts, and playful pranks. He often interacts directly with the crowd, using his balloons as props in his skits. Charlie’s days are filled with the vibrant and chaotic life of the circus, setting up tents, rehearsing new tricks, and preparing for each evening’s performance.
